Easter Alec Hodges Sculling Courses

Tideway Scullers School (TSS) of Chiswick have just completed the first Alec Hodges sculling course of the year, in challenging conditions.

Wind, rain and a rampaging Thames didn’t deter 20-odd improvers, a couple of whom had involuntary dips in the river, but still came up smiling. These courses are planned to be entirely in single sculls, and TSS must be the only club on the Tideway with sufficient club singles to be able to allocate 30 athletes, both adults and juniors, their own boat. As a rule we choose low-tide weeks for our courses, for the sake of better, calmer water, but at this time of year even that is unpredictable.

This week was nicely summed up in a tweet from Katy Baldwin of Barnes Bridge Ladies:

Have just had the most (sometimes type 2) fun on the @TidewayScullers Alec Hodges course. Hands are wrecked but back is miraculously holding up. Thank you so much to all the coaches, not so much to the weather gods...

This summer there will be five further courses.

Three for all abilities: 24-28th July, 31st July-4th August, , 21st-25th August.

And two with no beginners: 7-11th August, 28th August-1st September.
