1 - Which course am I eligible for?

We split courses by age and ability level. Please see below for how we assess this.

Age Categories

We group participants by age based on how old they are on 31st August the year before the course (Reference Date).

  • Juniors: Under 18 on the Reference Date

  • Adults: 18 or older on the Reference Date.

  • Minimum age: 11 on the Reference Date.

Ability Level

Beginners:

Suitable if you have limited or no rowing experience, or if you are not confident to be put out in a single on the Tideway.

Improvers and Above:

Suitable if you have significant sweep rowing experience (regardless of sculling experience), or are comfortable rowing in sculling boats such as doubles or quads, even if you have not rowed in a single scull before. This course is run entirely in singles, so prior boat handling skills are important.

Boats lining up to land

FAQs

What will happen on the course?

The course is primarily focused on water skills. Unless adverse conditions prevent water sessions, the whole course will be on the water. On some of our courses, you will also have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers. In the past this has included the RNLI.

What boats will I row in?

Our course is primarily run in singles and you are welcome to bring your own single and rack it at the club. If you are booking a course with another person and you would like to go in a double together, we can also arrange for this.

We do not put out any sweep rowing boats as this is a sculling course.

We look forward to welcoming you to Tideway Scullers in the near future!
